Sweet-tart, with a touch of salt and a subtle bite of pepper, fresh strawberries could not receive a better summer treatment than berries Italian style. Although it sounds unlikely, Strawberries Berries with Balsamic & Black Pepper is a lovely flavor combination, a perfect fit for summer’s ripe entourage of berries.
Strawberries served with sweet balsamic vinegar is an Italian classic and the fruit’s flavor is heightened by the addition of mild sea salt and the subtle warmth of black pepper, a contrast to the inherent sweetness of the berries. (Think delicious salted caramel)
I serve these berries all summer long and on-hand provisions from Bijouxs Basics pantry make it a breeze. Serve mini-skewers of strawberries and blueberries drizzled with sweet-tart balsamic syrup, along with bowls of biscotti or amaretti cookies, simple everyday beauty.
COOK’S NOTES: As with most recipes that rely on a just a handful of ingredients, the details make all the difference: large, ripe strawberries; a smooth, aged balsamic vinegar, such as Fini; a mild, finishing sea salt, like Maldon and your own freshly ground black pepper from your grinder will make this dish shine. Most of the ingredients can be found at your local supermarket or speciality foods store. Easily double or triple quantities to increase servings.

As always, enjoy. B
I love the simplicity of this, The sweetness of the berries with the bite of the pepper and balsamic vinegar must be very potent! And it sure is pretty.
Thank you Sue! This sweet-tart balsamic syrup is great drizzled on other summer berries such as raspberries, boysenberries, etc. but lush, ripe strawberries are my fav. Enjoy!
Beautiful, as always. I love the addition of the black pepper. I’ve been adding it to fruits, too and I love it!
Hello Valentina! My Mom used to add salt and/or pepper to certain fruit, it was not until I was a grown up that I understood how S&P can complement fruit’s natural sweetness. Thank you, as always!
