Bijouxs Featured 805 Living Home Issue

Merci, Merci again to 805 Living Magazine! Grateful to again be featured in The Home Issue. The central coast is now my new home with fresh grown produce right down the street. My Spice Poached Bananas are included in this month’s issue. On newsstands and online.

THE 805 COMMUNITY

Big thanks to the publishing team at 805 Living for including me in this Spring issue. After working as a home design consultant in Santa Barbara for 6 months, I came to know many of the great food options along the Central coast. The food community is growing.

COASTAL LIVING

The beautiful coastline creates so many opportunities for fresh seafood and a wide variety of produce grown in the many agricultural communities. The sea has influenced many of my new recipes, such as the incredible Hope Ranch Mussels with Fresh Ginger & Thai Basil and classic California Fish Tacos using our local California Rockfish.

SPICED POACHED BANANAS

This featured recipe is a take on classic Bananas Foster from New Orleans. The original recipe was inspired by a recipe from the famous chef Lee Bailey, who was way ahead of all things on food & home styling. I had the chance to take a cooking class with him and have one of his cookbooks signed – very nice memory.

ON THE HORIZON

Wow! This post marks No. 500 on the blog. Stay tuned by signing up for the recipe newsletter, there are new things coming to Bijouxs Little Jewels from the Kitchen.

Spa Chocolate Banana Bread with Pickled Strawberries

Spa Chocolate Banana Bread with Pickled Strawberries|Bijouxs Little Jewels

Wow, chocolate heaven, really. This bread is a rich, dark, dense loaf, made with ripe bananas, pureed prunes and chunks of bittersweet chocolate. I topped it with fresh quick-pickled strawberries and set in a pool of vanilla yogurt. Spa Chocolate Banana Bread fulfills the chocolate craving, always a little jewel. Betty’s Banana Cake

7984-web

Happy Birthday to me with a perfect classic cake – Betty’s Banana Cake – and yes, it’s a sheet cake – always a little jewel.

Everyone loves when they discover a little Bijouxs, you know a real little jewel, that special item with enduring qualities, charm and wonderful craftsmanship. Whether it is great solid maple salad bowl, classic Café de Paris Butter, or a simply delicious cake, like Betty’s Banana Cake, everyone loves to discover a little jewel.

I have been collecting for over 30 years, and Bijouxs is created to share them with you all.

Home and hearth are near and dear to me, and my Bijouxs are the little jewels, from my home to yours. Since it was recently my birthday, I thought the event called for a cake, a perfect time to share the newest little jewel, Betty’s Banana Cake, a new recipe and a little snag.

First the recipe. In my new place of residence, I am beginning to put down roots, just a year, but the seeds of friendship are being planted. This Easter I was lucky to have joined a wonderful family for a feast, home cooked food and lots of laughs – for dessert, the most simple and delicious banana cake, a childhood favorite, right before my eyes. Of course, the cook shared her recipe, and I was set to bake the cake. Except for one thing…

My recent move included a box or two of missing items…where was my 9×13 sheet pan? Never fear, friends at OXO to the rescue sending me a oh-so functional glass baking and storage set – just the thing to bake the perfect sheet cake and more.  The 14-Piece Bake, Serve and Store set is made from thermal shock resistant glass – great for an impatient cook like me – it can go from the freezer straight to the oven or microwave. I like glass for food storage, tossing out the plastic on the last move. So, I was now ready to bake the (my) birthday cake.

Betty’s Banana Cake is so simple and delicious – the truth. This moist cake is a perfect candidate for a simple sheet cake, and topping with true buttercream frosting is well, the icing on the cake. Another great feature of the OXO Glass Bakeware is that it comes with handy storage lids, which means the banana cake will stay fresh and makes it able to hit the road for sharing, if needed.

The beauty of a sheet cake is simplicity. However, you can bake the cake in a larger sheet pan and cut into smaller squares for banana cake bites for a party, or bake in two layer pans for a traditional cake. Anyway you slice it Betty’s Banana Cake is a hit.

I served my birthday cake on my favorite little jewel French Majolica plates. Thank you to Betty for the recipe and OXO for the bakeware – both are little jewels from the kitchen.
